Another free guided meditation MP3 is ready for you to enjoy…if you’re willing to spend just a few seconds letting me know what kind of meditations you like the most.
The point of this (incredibly short) survey is to make sure that you get exactly the kinds of meditation you most enjoy in the future. Your answers are anonymous and can’t be linked with you in any way, though I’m happy to publish the general results when the survey finishes, if you’re interested.
(Note: when the survey finishes, I’m going to take down this freebie as well, so if you want the meditation, please check out the survey ASAP).
You can find the survey at:
http://www.selfworks.net/member-meditation-survey?5
Thanks for your help, and enjoy your meditation!
UPDATE: This survey has now closed, but with some interesting results, which I’ll talk about in a future post. Many thanks to everyone who took part.

If you’re looking for free self improvement downloads to kick off the new year, there’s good news.
A *huge* giveaway of free products (well over 400) has begun and the site is now open for anyone to begin downloading any of the gifts that appeal to you. (Including our “Relaxing on the Beach” meditation, if you don’t have it already).
The gifts
I’ve only had chance to glance through the gifts briefly, and there are some gems (eg what looks to be a full and legal William James download, other relaxation audios, loads of ebook on topics like self-esteem and the like).
Having said that, there are quite a few titles that I would have said are aimed more at home-business people than personal development bods, so you may need to allow for this and search through until you grab something that appeals to you . Because some people seem to have got confused about the theme of the giveaway, parts are rather “salesy” too.
However, given that it’s free, you can’t beat the price, so if you’d like to pick up a load of freebies before this site shuts again (it’s purposely only open for a limited time, it seems) you can find it at:
www.selfimprovementgiveaway4.com
(As it’s actually quite hard for me as a contributor to access these freebies in the same way as you, I’d love your feedback as to how you find the giveaway to be.)
Have fun, and I hope you find at least one or two items that you like and which help speed you into 2010 in style.

Here’s our Christmas/New Year video. So turn your speakers on, sit back, take just one minute to relax and enjoy this…and have a very happy Christmas and New Year.
(P.S. YouTube cuts this off, and it’s a shame: the backing music is “Lullabye-Christmas” by Mike Schmid, and the fantastic site at Animoto.Com makes videos like this possible).

The blog has, for once, been quiet for a reason. I’ve finally put up a free guided meditation for public comment…and the production of it has just eaten my spare time. But it’s finished, and ready for you to enjoy.
The backstory here is that I’ve recorded them for years for various friends and clients, but have never “gone public,” as it were.
Just at the moment it felt like the right time to change this and see what everyone thinks. I’m giving away a 20-minute guided meditation, in exchange for your honest comments and feedback.

UPDATE: Following positive feedback from many quarters, and some re-editing too, this download is now for sale…but still at bargain price. Grab the full 20-minute meditation download now.
Empathy, Coincidence, or Imagination? December 3, 2008

Something really very strange happened today, that I could put down to empathy, coincidence, or imagination. I’ve decide to talk about it here, in order to see if you, or anyone else out there has any views on the matter.
As background, you really need to know that, bizarre though it may sound to some, I love small spaces. Being a short person (5′ standing up straight with a bit of luck behind me) small spaces usually feel like “home”. Rather than being claustrophobic, to me, they feel cosy, and, ”just the right size”.
Which means Tube journeys are actually quite pleasant for me, and a chance just to switch my brain into a free-floating, relaxed kind of mode. The kind of mode in which a person tends to pay not a wit of attention anything other than their daydream.
So imagine, when in the middle of this relaxed mode, and my journey, came the thought, clearly and distinctly, “These tube trains really aren’t big enough,” as space within the train seemed, in my perception, to “shrink” by 30% or more.
As a lover of small spaces, I was deeply perplexed by this. Then, came another thought, “Are you sure this feeling belongs to you?”
So I began to look around. And sure enough, there was something striking (or striking once I was actually paying attention to my surroundings, anyway). On one of the coldest days this year-trust me, it was freezing and even pretty cold underground-the man opposite me was twiddling with the air vents, trying to let more cold air in to the carriage. Next, he started pacing around the empty seats nearby. (This is not something people do on the Tube either. Sitting or standing in fixed and rigid silence, yes. Pacing around? Absolutely not. He was also sweating-although fair enough, he could have had the ‘flu.
Finally, when he did come to a standstill, he began gripping the grabrail, with knuckles as white as a thrill-seeker’s at the fair.Even though the train was just moving along as normal, he was hanging on for dear life.
Once I had spotted all of this, my perception of the train’s size bagan to return to normal. To my eternal shame though, I chickened out of asking the chap whether he was OK. I told myself that if someone was clearly trying to hide their fear, they wouldn’t want someone else to notice it. And the last thing a big burly man wants is to be seen to be weak in public, I reasoned.
So I settled for the harmless and probably slightly cowardly course of feeling “good vibes” and imagining they were pumping out into the carriage…And lost the chance, not only to help, but also to prove whether this was empathy, coincidence or imagination.
The real surprise came when I told my Long-Suffering Spouse the tale on returning home. Now, if you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you’ll know that my LSS prides himself somewhat on being highly rational. So, I was expecting many counter arguments, and maybe a friendly snort or two.
Instead, and without my prompting, LSS was as perplexed as me, knowing as he does, my love of small spaces. Finally, he turned and said,
“It could be empathy”.
I had, and have, no definitive answers. But if you do, please post a comment about this!
Meditation: An Ultra-Simple Tip? November 15, 2007

Do you ever find yourself wanting to meditate (or even just find time to relax) but feeling unable to do so because, “There just isn’t time and I’m too busy”.
If this is the case, you’re not alone. It happens to lots of us, given the speed of the world, and despite being a coach and supposedly knowing better, I have to put my hand up and ‘fess up to having this problem sometimes as well.
But help is at hand
The good news is, there’s an easy, simple and free way to overcome this problem, that I discovered by accident, but have begun to use more and more.
Whenever you next have this problem, just do the following.
1. Sit down.
2. Take a series of regular breaths, preferably where your in-breath, outbreath and pause between each in ans out phase of breath is roughly equal. So for example, you might breath in for a count of a particular number, pause for a count of the same number, breath out for a count of that number, and pause before the next breath for a count of the same number. The trick is also to do this just until you feel relaxed, which should only take three or four cycles of this at most.
(As to how long your count should be, or indeed, whether this exact sequence will be right for you as an individual…I can’t comment, but can only leave you to decide this for yourself.Only choose to do what feels comfortable for you as an individual. Some people will want a count of three or four, I happen to like six, and some people might even want eight. Or to make the count different for different phases of the breath. Or to breathe in a different way that suits their health and ability. Consult someone who knows your medical history, if in doubt).
The point of this phase is simply that you have a means of breathing and concentrating on it that works for you.
3. This third stage of actually meditating, then magically takes care of itself. Having persuaded yourself to sit down and do the breathing, “because after all, it’s only a few breaths and therefore a minute or so”, you’re then suddenly in a state where meditation seems a much more feasible and attractive idea, whether you carry on with breathwork, or any other type of meditation that you care to name.
Do try this, and check out how it goes for you. As a way to get round your conscious and “busy” mind, it may be one of the simplest tricks yet that actually works.
Hope this helps

The “Balance Wheel” is a famous and effective coaching tool that helps you to understand, in a visual format, just which areas of your life you might most like to address or change at any given point.
The good news is, there’s now an online version of this tool, which you can access here:

(Do try it-it’s free, and it works!)

This Meditation is Amazing… March 15, 2007

Picture the scene. I’m cranky and out-of sorts, due to a poor night’s sleep. Into my inbox plops a free qigong meditation (seated, with no jumping around). And fifteen minutes later, I feel not just restored, but better than for ages…with a profound desire to share this with you.
I suspect that the download (almost inevitably) is supposed to lead to some more bells and whistles of the paid variety in due course. And I can’t say anything about that, because I haven’t tried it and know nothing about it.
But I can say that this current 15 minute miracle is free, and seems downloadable until at least this Sunday.
If you’d like to download it, you’ll need to register, but that’s free too:

Hope this helps you too!

Which do you want first-the good news or the bad news?
And I guess, according to whatever you chose we should consider that at length in a blog by itself.
Briefly though, the bad news is that I’ve been rushing around and neglecting the blog.
The good news is though, that you gain…I’m so horrified that I haven’t been posting quite so much, it seems only fair to give everyone a gift.
I originally made this download for a friend, but she was adamant it was of a high enough standard for public release, so (despite my protestations about,”still learning how to edit out whistles and pops”) here goes.
You can find it, for the time being, at:
http://www.selfworks.net/wellbeingmeditation.mp3
and I’m shortly going to put it into the GoodyBag members’ area too, for good.
As ever, bear in mind that you need to use this only whenyou can relax completely, and it shouldn’t replace any kind of professional help.
Other than that-enjoy! Hope it helps
More soon (the blog is likely to be scanty until around the beginning of next week, and then back to normal).
