Is it Christmas already?! December 7, 2009

Am still in shock. Though the calendar has been helpful in showing, all year, that Christmas is on Dec 25th yet again :-) I still seem to have failed to get my act together. So am here again in panic mode, as the whole event has crept up behind me, “on rubber heels”, as my grandma would have said.

If you can identify with this too, the only solution of course, is for us to find a way to get into feeling more Christmassy, and get on with it. But how? Here are the things that have worked for me in the past (and some of which I’ll be re-visiting to get into the spirit of things):

1. Think about one thing that you love to do, that you can only do at this time of year. Personally, I like watching “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and the Christmas theme in it just feels too weird to watch in July. You may hate slushy movies, but love Christmas decorations. Or wrapping ribbons around presents. Or an extra hour under the duvet because you’re not going to work. Or eating turkey.

Take your pick. In any event, concentrating on what you do like is, as ever, going to be a bundle more relaxing than stressing out about the stuff you hate.

2. Speaking of relaxing, where is it written that all people above the age of 25 should cease to enjoy Christmas and turn it into one long stress-fest? Decide on the most relaxing way in which you can get everything done, and stick to it. (And yes, if that means people get vouchers, then they get vouchers…and will probably-even if secretly-really enjoy their consequent freedom to choose what they want).

3. People. If you’re delighted about who you’ll be with, enough said. But even if you sometimes feel you’d have more in common with Martians than the people around you on 25th, there is something you can do make things easier. If you drop your expectations, and just allow yourself to observe what’s going on, without any judgement or emotion (exactly as you might if you really were recording the habits of a Martian species), you’re likely to find that your enjoyment increases. Bizarre? Maybe. Effective? You bet.

At the same time, it does no harm to re-focus on the spirit of it all. Many of us aren’t conventionally religious, though we might, if forced to say something in the face of a crow-bar or a census-form, talk about being “Spiritual but not religious”.

However, whatever our beliefs, most human beings can agree that love, of whatever kind, is A Good Thing. Perhaps we can all just start with that thought, express it where possible, and work out the details from there.

Now, if you”ll excuse me, that Frank Capra masterpiece is still waiting to get me into the Christmas spirit…

The main purpose of this post is to give you a free Christmas MP3 meditation…over 10 minutes, of meditation, designed to give you a boost over the Christmas season, whenever you need it.

But I know that I also have to grovel again, having not posted for ages, due to the effects of work off the Web (and more recently, LSS and I both going down with the “lurgie”). Many apologies that this has taken so long . And yes, the blog will be back properly after Christmas.

Anyway, enough of that, and onto your present.

People talk about peace, goodwill and love at this time of year, but tensions can rise, and put them in short supply. So this MP3 meditation is designed to help you replenish them and feel good.

Enjoy, and if you like it, feel free to share it.

And in any event, please have the happiest of Christmases.

Finding Christmas Spirit December 18, 2006

Don’t know about you, but I really thought it wasn’t going to happen this year. The “Christmas spirit” thing, I mean.

In the welter of lists and cards and “things to do” I even began to wonder if I was “too old” for all this Christmas lark. Was it all just a huge commercial con, by which, in my gullibility, I’d been taken in for years?

But then I popped into a shop for some stamps today, and (probably unbeknown to the person concerned) got a sudden and quite unexpected shot of Christmas spirit, from the tiniest thing.

As I approached the counter, the sales assistant was trying on a “Santa” hat, with an expression of, “I-really-don’t-want-to-do-this-I’m-going-to-look-so-stupid” on her face.

Actually, as she had oner of those elfin faces, she looked great, and I told her so. She grinned, but kept the hat on anyway.

And the really odd thing was, I left the shop feeling really, truly “Christmassy” for the first time this year. (Though quite why this particular Christmas prop should have triggered the feeling and no other, I’m not sure).

The point here though, is two-fold.

First, it isn’t the big, expensive, splashy and showy things that tend to make people feel more “Christmassy”. It tends to be the small, and even faintly silly ones.

Secondly, if you’re serving the public directly and are uncomfortable with a Santa hat or its equivalent, take heart, and please, give it a go. You might just ignite someone’s Christmas spirit along the way.

Christmas is Coming… December 11, 2006

Christmas is coming…

A lame excuse for my lack of blog in the past few days, I know, seeing as it’s approaching at the same speed for everyone, but true nevertheless.

The whirl seems to get more intense each year. Leading, it seems, to ever more people feeling cynical, stressed and far from full of joy.

As one who almost slid into this over-stressed pit, here’s just a quick thought about how to stay out of it easily:

Follow your heart rather than your head in deciding how far toetake everything>

Yes, I know, it’s the old personal development platitude, “follow your heart” again: -) So, what does it actually mean in this context?

In a nutshell, do what you feel you want to do rather than are supposed to do…And if there are factors imposed by someone else’s,” must do’s”, find ways of making the whole thing as close as possible to what you want in your heart.

So for example, only buy presents for the people, as far as possible, to whom you actually want to send them. If “Great-Aunt Betty ” never seems the easiest person to get on with but must come along, who else can you invite too? Let yourself have some of what you’re yearning for too, for without this essential safety-valve lies unwarranted martyrdom.

And if you follow your heart this way, you might be surprised to find extra room in it to see all those stressful or difficult people or situations in a softer or easier light as well.

Hope this helps
