What if Countries Were People? February 23, 2009

Have you ever wondered what would happen if the countries of the world were people, and they came for coaching?. (Probably not :-) , but humour me anyway, on this one. )

Anyway, I got to thinking about the question of countries-as-coaching-clients, for one specific reason. In coaching, people often have a great moment of breakthorough when they realise that they need to do something different. Or, to put it another, if more cliched, way, that, “if they carry on doing what they’ve always done, they’ll carry on getting what they’ve always got”.

I’m thinking specifically with this about the UK, and the, “interesting,” economic decisions made therein at the moment. Now, if you’re a regular reader of these posts (and thank you, if you are, by the way) you’ll know that I’m not an economist. or even vaguely good at maths. But even I know that if throwing billions of pounds at a problem hasn’t worked so far, then repeating the same action (ie doing what you’ve always done) isn’t likely to work either.

The trouble is, countries are not people. People are innately resourceful, always know, deep down, what their best course of action is, and once they’ve decided to change, can take action quickly.

So maybe the question is, “How can we imbue our countries with more of the characteristics of individuals, and help the innate resourcefulness and innovation that each of us has, shine through, and take pressure off, beleagured leaders?”

I have no answers, by the way. But coaches know that, if you ask the right questions, clients themselves can always access their own best answers.

Perhaps it can still be so with countries, too.

Coaching-Any Questions? February 28, 2008

Do you have any questions, either about coaching itself, or maybe even more pressingly, which you’d like to ask a coach about, but haven’t yet had the chance?

If so (and I probably should have spelt this out ages ago) this is the place to ask them…and also to share your solutions to issues that other people may find useful too, given that this blog is about, “what works”.

If you do have a coaching question you’d like to ask, or your own success story, please do comment about it after any post.

Please bear in mind that if I reply about it, the reply will be publicly available to everyone, that I won’t have specific details about your situation, and that in any event, a coach’s job is to help you elicit your own answers from yourself, rather than giving them to you.

Having said that, if we move forward in this way, I can be sure that I’m blogging about things of real intereest to you as a reader, and you get more of the info you need. Which seems like it’s a good solution all-round. What do you think?

So, over to you (not just in relation to this post but any). Please do ask for what you want!

So the fateful week has come, when GordonBrown finally gets to be Britain’s Prime Minister.

As a personal development bloggster, however big the event, I’m always much more interested in politicians’ attitudes and language than their actual political colours. After all, no-one can predict the events that will take place, but it’s usually fairly easy to predict how an individual leader will react to them, based on their belief-system.

So what of Mr Brown? Equivocal, so far, if quotes on the BBC website are to be believed

On the one hand, he’s said that his party “must have a soul”. Probably a tick in the box (although as most of the rest of us have never lost ours, this is more a case of catching up with the voters than leading a charge towards progress).

It’s a second comment he’s made though, that disturbs me. Apparently, he’s said, “I shall try my utmost”.

Now on the face of it, this sounds like the earnest, heartfelt desire of a conviction politician, ready to do whatever it takes. And in a sense , it is.

The problem is though, from a coaching standpoint, “trying” never works.”Trying”, however, earnest, well-meant and work-ethic driven, always keeps the tryer in the “trying” space…that grey hinterland between desire and achievement of an outcome. If you’re trying, you’re rarely actually “doing” or succeeding, but more likely, working your socks off to feel like you’re putting in a self-defined amount of required effort that will enable you to sleep at night.

All good, earnest stuff. But if I could give one message to Mr Brown…

Don’t worry so much about the “trying”. Just do your utmost.

Hope this helps generally, in the fairly likely event that you’re not Gordon Brown :-)

More soon (this week is as packed as ever)

Coach as Dreamkeeper? June 21, 2007

You’ve probably already heard many definitions of coaching, and why it works. And yes, it is a relationship of empowerment and change and probably many more things besides.

But recently, I’ve developed a different take on why it’s powerful. (And no, just in case you’re wondering, I’m not talking just about coaching from yours truly, but about any coaching from someone professional, who cares about your success and well being).

Here’s the thing. 99.9% of people have dreams (even if they’ve locked them away). But because most of us are actually pretty conscientious people, in everyday life, it’s all too easy for them to get superseded by demands from family, jobs and friends…even bank managers.

When you tell a coach about your dreams though, those dreams suddenly get priority. You get on a path to fulfilling your deepest ambitions and dreams, whatever your other commitments.

Now, this can be a tad inconvenient. With dreams voiced, and someone to remind you of them, you’ll need to take steps towards them, even when that work project’s due in and you’ve got the builders in.

But it also means that those dreams can be unlocked, and the coach can keep them safe and in mind, until you take them from him or her and claim your new way of being without any further outside help.

So a coach isn’t just a coach, but a dreamkeeper…Which may well be part of the reason why the process works.
