Controversy, and a strange, round disc August 2, 2007

Hello again
And yes, I’m really sorry there’s been no blog this week. I admit having been rather blown off course by the mysterious appearance of a strange, round yellow disc this week. Apparently it’s called “the sun” though it’s been such a while since we’ve seen it in London, no-one was quite sure and kept scuttling round with a coat on anyway, just in case.
As usual of course, I digress, and should really get on with the controversy, with which I may need you help.
I’m having something of a “debate” (that puts it quite politely) with a colleague about which type of literature is more inspiring:
Is it:
a) A story which says, “I did this, I did that, and now I’m a marvellous success” or
b) A story which says, “I did X. Y was the successful result, and if you’re interested in doing this successfully, have a go at a, b, and c.”
Or to put it another way, do you find self-help authors who use “I” or self-help authors who major on “you” more effective?
I’ve always favoured “you” abeing a more confidence-boosting choice. But I accept I may be wrong about this, and if I am, it would be better to hear it now, so that everyone can get their info in their preferred style?
Answers on this please!
Many thanks
Clare
What Do You *Really* Want? Part Two May 30, 2007

Thought number two on this topic is very short, but also (for some) controversial.
Shoot me down if you like, but my observation is that people almost always know what they want. It’s just that the path to getting there seems to be so fraught with difficulty that it’s too far away, or even “unattainable”.
Questions like:
“If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you do?”
“If you could be guaranteed no negative consequences, what would you do?” and
“What do you fantisise about doing?”
may help you, or anyone you’re working with, to unlock this kind of outcome.
And yes, you’re right. That’s not the end of the story, because leaving anyone hankering after something that either seems to present, or truly may present, huge obstacles, would be grossly unfair and misleading.
But if you’re seeking an answer to the “What do I really want?” question, chew over these thoughts first, and then add on the next bit tomorrow.
Hope this helps
Clare

Ah, well there’s an object lesson for me. There in the last post, steaming mad that the blog wasn’t getting to anyone…I assumed that it had to be Blogger’s fault.
Turns out that an upgrade on the Selfworks server had changed over some crucial gizmos that had to be tweaked. (As you can probably tell from that highly-technical explanation, it was my Long-Suffering Spouse, not me, who had to do the tweaking).
The point here, even though it goes demonstrably against myself, is that next time I’ll remember that what works (in a variety of situations, not just technical ones) is to explore every possible way in which I can change my own behaviour before assuming any problem and it’s solution, lies outside myself.
Humble pie duly eaten-the blog is back.
More soon-probably Friday, realistically.
